Ransburg Scout Reservation - Chapel Gateway

Purpose:

Create a point of reference in the Chapel area to highlight the Scout law, particularly the point of Reverent.

Reason :

Tony was involved in Boy Scout of America since he started as a cub scout, progressed to Eagle Scout and continued to be very actively involved in the Del Mi District and Crossroads of America Council with his Wife and 4 Sons. He always felt very strongly about once an Eagle always an Eagle Scout. This meant to him that living the Scout oath and law daily was part of his day to day routine. As a father, scout leader and mentor he conveyed this message to scouts and parents in his thoughts, words, and actions. He believed the reverent point should not be taken lightly but with serious contemplation regardless of a scout’s religious beliefs. He believed in service to others and giving thanks to God for all the blessings of life and for the steadfast way in which God cares for everyone.  He would often ask a scout, “now how does the scout law and oath pertain to what you are doing or discussing”

Ransburg Scout Reservation and Philmont Scout Ranch hold many wonderful memories for the Smart Family from the number of years spent camping at both. Tony spent many summer vacations at camp with our sons. He was always ready to go on a weekend camp out or weeklong camp with the scouts to enjoy the woods, the comradery with the adults and to encourage the youth to grow and learn. He received great joy in seeing cub scouts, become boy scouts and grow into mature responsible adults.

A close scouting friend of Tony’s explained to me how he associates Tony with Scouting, which had a large impact on the design and location of the gateway.

I think that an entry  to the chapel area that reminds us of the Philmont gateway would be pleasing to Tony.  We all know Tony had a “rock solid strong foundation” upon which he built his life (strong in his faith and adherence to the Scout Oath and Scout Law), and that he was “tall as the timbers” when it came to setting and achieving goals, living up to the Eagle charge and making it a great day, every day!
