The Story behind the AMS Foundation Inc.
The AMS Foundation Inc has been established in memory of Anthony “Tony” Morris Smart. Tony grew up in Lutherville, MD where he started his scouting career in Cub Scouts. His Mother was a den Mom for him. He joined Troop 440 and became an Eagle Scout in 1979. He loved camping at Broadcreek Camp as a youth with his troop. He also served as a Junior Assistant Scoutmaster.
Tony came to Indiana in 1981 to attend DePauw University and met Kathy Guttman there. They were married in 1986. In 1993, they settled in Carmel, where they raised 4 boys . When the oldest was cub scout age, Tony got involved with Pack 198 a Den Leader, and Committee Chair for several years. Then continued with his sons on to Boy Scouts. He was a Committee chair for Troop 131 for several years and then moved on to be one of the founding Members of Troop 202. He became a Del-MI District and Crossroads of America Council volunteer in many ways. He was a District Chairman, District Popcorn Kernel, District Finance Chair, Council Finance Chair, and Council Camping Chair to name a few positions. His biggest passion was to share with a Scout (youth and adult) the ideals of scouting and of living up to the Scout Oath and Law. He always gauged his day by how he had helped another person and what actions displayed the Scout Law. He wanted to make someone have a great day whether at a scouting event, or as the Business Technology Director of OneAmerica Securities.
In May of 2018, Tony was diagnosed with Stage IV Pancreatic Cancer. He only discovered this by knowing a small pinched feeling in his leg was not right. By the grace of God and great Medical Doctors and Nurses he was diagnosed quickly and received treatment. Although chemotherapy did not remove the cancer, the Smart Family believes it gave us an extra several months with him.
